Oh! I remember seeing him on this very tour when it stopped in Cincinnati all those years ago! This was just before they changed the unevens to their present configuration, so we don't see those hip-wraps any more. Loved his response every time he did them though...a funny reminder of the differences between a man and a woman! Thank you for the great laugh, Paul!

This moves me to tears; the doctor who treated him afterwards said he couldnt comprehend how Shun didnt "collapse in screams of pain" after landing his dismount. Shun still walks with a limp even to this day. When asked about it Shun said "the pain shot through me like a knife and brought tears to my eyes. But now I have a gold medal and I dont feel any pain". What a man.

I remember watching this on TV in 1976. The sports commentator was in awe that he was going to perform his routine. So, we all knew what to expect: Shun did the routine nearly flawlessly and then landed the dismount as well as one could land a dismount on a single working leg, injuring himself badly as he knew he would. This is always the performance I think of when I think of courage.

no that was true. she was underage. she had said that she was 16 at one point and she had had two teeth missing from the front of her mouth that they claim resulted from an uneven bar accident. Then North Korea had listed her age to be 15 for three years in a row so they were banned

Thank you for posting this video. I was on PGS team with Marcia before she went to Grossfelds. She was one of my idols growing up. I believe not only was she denied the chance at the Olympics, but also, because of the boycitt, her proper place in Gymnastics history.

I still think the USA should gather together all those Olympians and let them at least march in an opening ceremony of a future Olympics. Back to Marcia. She was always so fabulous on bars. Hi, Marcia lives in MA with her two children. She teaches gymnastics and is a personal trainer, pilates instructor. Her daughter is a very good gymnast who competes. Not being able to compete in the 80 Olympics because of Carter almost destroyed her as well as all the athletes who worked so hard to attain their goal and have it ripped away.

Whatever happened to her? She was the first American to win gold at Worlds, yet she's never heard about or mentioned as one of the legends in American gym...truly sad given that she won at a time when it was nearly impossible to break the Soviet-East Eurpean bloc.

Years ago, the gymnastics were an expression of art, they used to be so elegant, and they expressed the feelings and the music all over the routine. I love this kind of gymnastics, like Pavlova today. It´s a shame that actually this sport is only acrobatic and tumbling passes, and lacking of expression...

And I prefere gymnasts who looks like women as Kuchinskaya rather than gymnasts who has childish facts like the majority of chinese gymnasts or many gymnasts of the 1980s.

The equipment today is sooooo much better than back then. It has a spring to it that allows the gymnasts to perform such amazing skills. For all the dazzling tumbling in today's routines, there is definitely something lacking. 99% of today's gymnasts don't have even a fraction of the grace and elegance of this woman and others competing at that time. The only gymnast I remember seeing at this year's Olympics that came close to this kind of balletic artistry is Nastia Liuken.

This is beautiful, and she is so good. I was watching the gymnastics Olympic trials on TV a few days ago.. I saw 1 out of.. a whole bunch.. who did not have excessively muscular, meaty legs. They're so muscular and they can't really dance. Whereas, Natalia can tumble really well, making it look effortless.. and dance really beautifully.

You do not see this type of artistic expression these days. How she tied everything together so effortlessly. Its a lost skill. Though there are remnants of this style today its all but lost sadly...i think the last person I saw with the fluidity of a ballerina in artistic gymnastics was Lilia Podkapyava (forgive the spelling)

Imagine, if MLR was a gymnast today, with that kind of power, what tumbling she may be capable of. With the upgraded spring floor from then til now and all the new training equipment. I wonder what extra difficulty, if any, that she'd be able to throw.

Maxi Gnauck was competing triple twists as early as the late 70's, so the triple twist was definately there by 1984; it was still, indeed, rare though. Silivas actually performed a pultritudinous triple back in the 80's, so I can see what the commentator was saying...

This is 1984 so Silivas was about 11 or 12 years old here. Still pretty great tumbling for one so tiny. You can see with each passing year she improved on grace, and dance.

I don't think there were a lot of people doing triples in the early 80's. A soviet I cannot remember performed one at a small meet in '85 or '86. Iveta Polokova of Czechoslovakia performed a triple twist punch front in the late eighties, and two bulgarian gymnasts, including Delia Vodenitcherova competed triple twists in 87 worlds and 88 Olympics and I believe Delia did it also in '92.

Actually there were a couple of Bulgarians throwing triples at the '87 worlds and '88 Olympics. Delia Vodenitcherova was one of them if I recall. Also, Iveta Polokova (last name might be a bit off) of present-day Czech Republic was doing triple twist, punch front back in the 80's too. As for this far back in the 80's? I can think of no one doing a triple twist as of yet. I'm sure a Soviet somewhere was doing them - I think in '85 or '86 A soviet threw one in competition.

Indeed she didn't... For you to have an idea, Onodi performed a triple twist at the Olympic Games in 92... People were amazed by it... she was the ONLY one doing that in that competition!!!! So, yeah... Silivas had one of the best triple twists in 84!!!

Whooops, she did step out of the mat right at the beginning didn't she? Anyway, I love the stag dive roll at 1:00 - I am currently teaching one of my students that skill to put in her floor exercise routine. It's only an A but wow it looks so good. Thanks for sharing.

It's incredible to me because of the lack of padding. When you look at the conditions our gymnasts train in with foam everywhere, it must have taken nerve to do what he did. He's awesome. =D

you can't really critique his form because the term "form" is relative to what time period you're looking at. For instance, nowadays, we have recognized that in order to build real power you want to stretch your handspring far, whereas back then (and I've seen it in gymnastics books published in the 30s) they taught you to arch your back in the handspring... just an example.... "form," as we know it, changes. sweet video
