The air in the bottle is HEATED. The gas in the bottle EXPANDS and pushes air OUT of the bottle. The bottle is then CAPPED by the egg. As the WARM air in the capped bottle cools, it contracts and creates less pressure inside the bottle than outside.

Excellent--you make the argument that allows the solution. First, it's simple, the egg WILL NOT go into the bottle as it does unless there's a pressure differential between inside and outside: THE PRESSURE IS LOWER IN THE BOTTLE. How can that happen? Since we can assume (provisionally) that burning might tend to INCREASE the amount of gas in the bottle (as you point out)--then combustion could only (by itself) make things WORSE. more...

As the oxygen is used up carbon dioxide and water are produced, if anything the pressure inside the bottle should increase... plus the heat from the flame should also increase the pressure inside the bottle

A vacuum is merely the LOWEST pressure you can have. It's not necessary to have a vacuum. All that is necessary is that enough air is removed from the bottle so that, even with the presence of the egg, it STILL is under less pressure than the outer atmosphere. Under that condition the outer atmosphere will push the egg into the bottle. This is how a hot-air balloon works: heat the air, it expands, and some air LEAVES the balloon--leaving less pressure than before. It then becomes buoyant.

Well, one thing is CERTAIN: It DOES have something to do with pressure. If, as kinggeber says, the oxygen disappears, then that means the total pressure inside the bottle is reduced--which has everything to do with pressure. ONLY pressure can make the egg go into the bottle.

Wrong. Oxygen is not "burned up," it's combined with carbon to make CO2, which is itself a gas. What happens is that the air inside the bottle is heated, thus it expands, and pushes much of it out of the bottle. At that point the egg is put in the top, which prevents air from getting back INTO the bottle. Then...the air in the bottle cools and contracts--i.e., is of much lower pressure than the room air. The greater relative pressure of the room air then "pushes" the egg into the bottle.
