I am a traveling notary and I saw hundreds ot these. It is a crime for me to give my advice or opinions becuase I am not an attnory, so I had to keep my mouth shut. But what I was was people who got themselves maxed out in debt with big cars, and mall credit cards, then got a neg am loan to cover it. Pay cash and don't live beyond your means, and you won't need a neg am loan.

Other than the final season, this show was incredible. I can relate to it more than most "family" type sitcoms on t.v. My family was closer to the Connors that any other t.v family. They want to sell us on the idea that these penalties are based on deterring people from dodging their debts but there is a great deal of incentive to loan money to someone who can't pay you back in a timely manner. Its the same strategy that was used on poor people in the past to lock them into a life of indentured servitude. What do you think is a fair punishment for such a mistake? Double what was borrowed? Triple? As someone who is not in debt you're opinion on this issue is valuable.

My attitude would be exactly the same as yours if students were merely forced to pay back what they rightfully owe. The problem is that penalties added to defaulted loans are well beyond reason. I'm sure we both agree that someone shouldn't borrow money they know they can't pay back, but what is a fair punishment for that error in judgement. Today the punishment is PERPETUAL debt.

My parents are much like you, having paid for my undergrad degree and now for four years of veterinary medical school. That alone may qualify me to be a "spoiled brat" by most, but I try not to be--I rarely buy new things, go out partying/drinking, etc. As much as I already do, I can probably never appreciate enough the incredible gift they have given me, asides from growing to be a self-sufficient adult who contributes to society and takes care of them in their old age.

Well I agree and disagree with you here Don. I believe if you use debt to go on shoping spree at the mall, get a car loan to get things you want NOW is really bad since all these things depreciate immediately after you buy them (just like you stated in your video). But if you use debt to buy things that will produce you income or assets then that would be using debt to your advantage on things that have value. Using hard money loans to flip or fix up a house to sell at a higher price.

If you have a good biz idea, you should be able to structure it with a slug of equity and low leverage - find partners. The first step in getting a home loan is GETTING QUALIFIED. This is the banks job. They are supposed to look at your collateral and income and decide based on that information--HOW MUCH MONEY THEY CAN LEND. If they lend you too much money it's THEIR FAULT. This process didn't just happen with minority loans. Many of these homeowners were white. If the buyers were qualified, they would not need loans from the government. The mal-investment must be liquidated before any recovery can occur. With the central bankers fighting tooth and nail to prop up high prices and refinance mal-investment, recovery is going to be very slow and painful. To quote Austen, "but I have always supposed that to be my own fault".
