This was done on a Decommsioned ship to show the power of a single torped called th mark 48. It was done with one torpedo and the ship istelf was gutted of all explosives and was basically a floating hollowed out ship.

Derwent was used as a testbed for ship survivability trials with many explosions set off within, after she was towed off the WA coast and scuttled. I served aboard Derwent and agree with you about them being good ships.

It was sunk by a Collins class submarine in 99, the Ovens paid off in 95 and there were no other Oberon class subs left in commission in the Australian navy in 99, I also was involved with the tow of Ovens to Fremantle where she is now on display.

I assisted with the tow out of the Torrens, she was cleaned of all fuels and ammunition and set addrift of Western Australia for the sinkex. I served in this class of ship in the Aussie navy, they were bloody good ships.

Huge and slower ships are easy targets for torpedoes. Small and fast ships are for missiles :)

In the US Navy, a Harpoon missile/s, or Exocet Missile in others, would be launched from a Sub, giving the enemy very little time to retaliate or evade. Cold-War Submariner

In reality though, a torpedo would not be the first choice to destroy a surface ship, they are generally used for attack on other Submarines. A torpedo takes too long to reach the desired target, would give the enemy ship time to retaliate before the torpedo reached them or might even miss it's target if countermeasures are used effectively.

FYI, this is exactly what a ship would look like when hit by a Mk48 torpedo, that is if you are lucky. If this ship had a full load of fuel and weapons the explosion would have been even greater. As another poster stated, modern submarine launched torpedoes are designed to "break the back" of the enemy ship causing greater structural damage than just blowing a hole in the side. Granted the hole would be quite large but the ship could feasibly still float and/or sail home and be repaired.

No no it is a remote controled destroyer. Fake the only way a ship blows up like that is if it is hit were the ammunition is kept. Even then this is a little exaggerated
