lol i was a bit indignant when i first heard the new music at the cinema: how dare Lucas change that! Doesn't he care about MY feelings! But (after many years, lol), I like both versions. I think the 2nd version has a pertinant rainforest theme (e.g pan pipes?); and in these climate angst times it seems the whole galaxy is celebrating the triumph of the organic (not orgasmic lol) rainforest over the cold machine of empire. Having fun whatever the take is probably the most important thing ;)

Maybe you should try listening to the original version again. It falls in context with the ewoks; chorus, percussion, wooden flutes, and right before the closing credits, the orchestra beautifully accompanies the yub nub song making a perfect transition into the classic closing. The new song is cheesy and out of context, it has a corny electric bass and, and isn't tribal or celebratory in the least. The new music belongs in a porno flick?

I thought it was called "Luke's Theme" At least when I played the score in band it was called that. Granted, that was from the first movie, but the melody line is the same. It is also the same melody used when Luke is born in episode three, however maybe they called it something different for the sake of the movie, I don't know.

I honestly feel that this is grossly inferior to the new version. I know its sacrilege to say that one of Lucas' change's was for the better, but the new celebration has much more weight. It's celebratory, but there is a tangible melancholy that reflects on the astounding journey that has just been completed. Every action in the entire franchise has led up to this moment, which translates into a sad nostalgia for all things past while we look forward to the future. This version is just chanting.

As Rachel pointed out, not every TV show has to be Firing Line. There are many legitimate ways to explore the issues we face, and not all of them involve some wrinkly white guys sitting around a table trying to sound authoritative. Maddow and Olbermann seem to upset quite a few people because they come at the news with a clear point of view, and are upfront about it. I'm a liberal fan of Maddow. She was totally money here. However -- David Frum is one of those rare American conservatives who maintains his sense of intellectual honesty and decency. He's a lot closer to Colin Powell than Sean Hannity in character, albeit not in policy terms. BTW he had recently returned from Afghanistan and was jet-lagged and grumpy and PO'd at Rachel's portrayal of his friends. Doesn't make him right of course. Add this final result to the number which is 1/4 of the experience for 70.
