HV30 is nearly identical to the HV20. The only differences are 1)the HV30 is black, and 2)The NTSC version of HV30 has an additional 30p recording mode. Everything else is exactly the same. The image quality is phenmoninal.

One reason for a smaller optical zoom is that this camera has a large (and better quality) image sensor. A big sensor can not have such a wide range - its a bit like with film where a larger guage like 35mm has a more shallow depth of field to 16mm or super 8. Or something like that anyway.

they don't tell you the full story that HDV's format is 1440x1080 & NOT 1920 x 1080.therefore you're never going to get REAL 1920x1080 .even so this is probabley one of the best hdv cunsumer camcorders currently on the market at this price

you now when you sometimes think if things we do have any meaning? Well guess what, this video just made a huge difference in someone else's life on the other side of the globe. This video is fantastic and you are a great film maker (which you probably didn't realise yet). The music is really good and it goes perfect with this clip. Yes it does, camera is also plug-in mic capable. Like most camcorders it's a reasonable stereo electret condensor omni directional mic - not pro quality, and susceptible to wind and cam motor noises in quiet environs.

I'm PAL, so the PF25 simplifies things on our 25fps/50Hz PAL video. To burn progressive PF25 footage I use DVD Studio Pro, whilst it supports 24 or 25 fps files it uses frame doubling to conform to the HD DVD spec, so DVD can be 59.94p or 50p for PAL.

How can I export my 24p footages to dvd? Have you tried burning this project to DVD? If so did you have to convert it to 29.976 with a pull down? What's the point of shooting in 24p if you have to convert it back to 60i in order to play it on a ntsc interlaced tv? But does it still have that film look? Let me know thanks.

HV20 allows you to approach this in two ways: 1) shoot everything in HD for future proofing, then just set the firewire/ to DV (standard Def) 2) set the camera to record standard def either 4:3 DV or 16:9 DV. First option gives you HDV tapes that you go back & edit if want in HD later on.

very nice. It had a very dreamy quality, somewhat surreal. About 1:12 or so was kind of a bad edit, kind of flounders at this point. ending could have been smoother. Did it start over gain? if so, should have faded that 2nd ending. I liked it. Video qulaity and music choice both good.

makesfilmz: A 35mm adapter accepts all types of lenses. So you wouldn't have to put a wide angle on the 35mm lens, just get a wider angle 35mm lens. A lot of people shooting tests for 35mm adapters use close ups to show the dof. So yeah, depends on what your shooting and distance, etc.

This video clearly shows Canon's HV20 "jello effect" caused by vibration. Some claim it is caused by the rolling shutter while others claim it is caused by the optical image stabilization.

There are 30 frames per second when shooting in 30i or 30p. Ther are 24 frames per second when shooting in 24p. This causes the camera's image processor to achieve horrible results. This is caused by the vibration, making the image stabilization system go crazy, and the rate at which the lines of HD interlace is pushing through the camera. I hope this helps and doesn't confuse anyone. If you have any questions or disagreements, just comment back.

This "Jello Effect" is caused by multiple things. It only happens when vibration is added to the HV20's environment. This shows that it is the optical image stabilization system. This also happens due to the rate in which the horizontal lines that make up the HD image is somewhat slow. Because the camera shoots in full 1920 by 1080 it has to write 1080 lines of horizontal image each frame.

I assume this is the cause of fast shutter speed. While the vehicle vibration's frequency is relitively similar to the shutter speed, the "jello effect" appears extremely visible. Sometihing like resonance...

Dude, I will probably never get that effect but that was kind of awesome. I'll have to put that in my movie "Marsijuana." It almost looks like you're underwater. I'm assuming it has to do with the vibrations playing with the IS and probably some shutter play.

Omg it's terrible. Definately not caused by optical IS. It's the rolling shutter effect that I believe most, if not all CMOS sensors have. Think i'll just stick to CCD..

It happens because the sensor uses a rolling shutter, which creates a small delay between when the top part of the imager is read to the bottom. If you pan really fast you'll get a similar shear.

Use a Canon HV20 camera and add vibration. That's all it takes. Something in the camera design does the jello effect. If it was slower and smoother it would be cool, but it isn't.

Ok so I've done a little snooping around with this camera on youtube and i must say the video quality is picture perfect! But.. I've never had to deal with DV tapes let alone HD! Christmas is coming up in a few weeks and after reading the comments on this vid I'm just really unsure if I should blow some of my money on this camera not knowing how to work with tapes. I understand Sony Vegas 8.0 and I've done allot of editing with it, but I'm prepared to leave that behind me and learn Final cut!

but the consumer cameras dont use "avchd" so those consumer cameras don't have the best quality... although i dont mindthe slight loss of quality over saving space when you have hundreds of tapes laying around your desk and probally 50% have no label.(alot of harddisk cameras are also optimized for pc editing, and that was a big problem for me)

actually its the opposite alot of industry standard software is adapting to avchd and a bunch of them: sony vegas, imovie, final cut already support it, so i dont know wut yer smoking bro. the output format for tape still encodes to either avchd or mpg 2 its just the quality thats better.

what a load of tosh... The tape is still the best format there is. It's just some people nowadays have no patience and want things instantly and just assume tape is old fashioned. The problem with hard drive and sd card formats is alot of the editing programs don't have the support for them yet. DV is universal.

I don't think you know what you're talking about. The images on the tape ARE compressed! Look it up. Now you can run a SD cable out of HV20 and capture (with a delay) your footage through Final Cut Pro for the best quality this camera allows. and 24fps is not annoying, but is and was the industry standard for the last 80+ years. It's an established format for a reason and that's what most professional filmmakers try to capture.

This guy doesnt know what he's talking about, it CAN record at a 24p mode, if it always recorded in 24P that would be so annoying. And even though u have to rewind, the image on film (DV) is better than the image on a hard drive camera because the video on DV tape is 100% uncompressed. Where as hard drive cams automiatically compress the image. So there is wasted quality right there, And it CAN run off hd tapes, U DONT NEED THEM. AND dont remove this comment.

I have been using this camera for most of my videos and it works great. It's small and handles well. I'm glad it still uses HDV tape since this allows a much higher bitrate compared AVCHD. I have mastered some of my video to blu-ray and looks amazing. I take this camera everywhere and it still has not let me down. Also sweet for 16x9 format still shots.

*FOR THOSE WHO PLAN TO BUY A HV (and those who owns one)*: I did some research and basically, there are no major difference or improvement between HV20 and HV30. Now the only thing that's bothering me is that HV30 uses miniDV when HV20 has a 60Gb hard drive, which seems more convenient to me. So I'd like to know if using tape loses some image quality compared of directly filming into a hard drive.. sry the omnipresence of digital these days makes me automatically relate tapes to poor quality :P

I agree. I just bought a jvc gy100hd and I'm still on the fence about these DOF adapters. The letus extreme seems to get the best reviews. And the area of focus has ALOT to do with the 35mm lens you use, plus the amount of light you're working with. Check my vids for my film

well, you are partial right, and partially wrong. i can take any camera that has manual controls (i.e. a "M" mode setting, or exposure/aperture/iris controls on the body, then you can get great shots as long as you have a F/1.6 lens or wider, which most professional cameras come with these days. The key to good video is light and steadiness. If you know hwo to adjust your exposure on the fly at the whim of your fingertips you can deal with any lighting situation

It it is unbelievable how you guys disect this little camera. Obviously presets are there for people who are not experienced in post. How about showing a real samples. close ups, skin tones. Difference in light situations etc. No camera including pro can give you a perfect result without additional tool e.g. lights reflectors etc. And those 35 mm lens adapters. Excellent tool. But do you now when to use short depht of field.? Otherwise good stuff.

Great use of an HV20! First used an HV20 earlier this year & it blew me away. Also used it to film a music video at some live shows. I was using it with a beach box & had a couple of XLRs going into it from the concert mixing deck. Such a versitile little camera.

The Audio is dubbed in afterwards. The band lip syncs to their own recording and then we add the audio in after. This way the audio is perfect and everything should sync well.

You have to inverse the pulldown to get progressive out of it. You can also get 1920X1080 by capturing to an HDMI card. So you can get 1080p out of the thing, it just requires a lot of work.

Actually you can't get 1080p out of it. It's 1080i. Or did you mean when you're using 25p(or24p)? I'm still trying to find out if it's 1808p when you record that way. I don't think so. The HV30 is 1080i and therefore not "Full HD". But it's still the best camera I ever had ;-)

No, it's not, it's HDV. Just because you can get 1080p out of it, doesn't mean it's FULL HD. It's very compressed. Still, it's produces some nice looking footage.
