I hate to digress from the topic of this video, which is Shaw's flawless recording of "Stardust", but I'm astonished at your evaluation. Crosby's recording was good, not exceptional. Cole's version was definitive and unforgettable. I say this as a fan of both-- Crosby's was recorded in 1931 when he was in great voice. However, his rather playful habits with the tempo detract from the beauty of the melody, as well as the longing description of the lyrics.

This is one of the better instrumental versions of Stardust. It preserves the melodic line. Other versions "deconstruct" the melody too much, destroying its beauty. I'll never understand why so many talented musicians feel compelled to depart from the score so far that the melodic spine is lost. I suppose they get bored playing it "straight." That's unfortunate. The Nat Cole version is the best vocal version. For the same reason.

The average show on broadway cost anywhere from $0.30-$3.40, movies were $0.20-0.30, so his shows could have cost anywhere from $0.05-$4 at a premium. With 1940 things were still ramping up out of the great depression, you had a world war going on and not too many people could afford much with wartime rationing either. Going to see him would have been a luxury in some cases. Best lead I could find hope it helps.

yeah it takes a while to get used to. V12 will enable you to play easier, but 56's can make you stable even in high registers. Your tone may change also.

I think it's just that I'm not used to the 56's, or maybe I just got a bad batch, but sometimes when I sustain a note, I break. So I prefer V-12's but I do use 56's just to try and get used to them.

I hope your little brothers do enjoy it and get the same pleasure we got from it as kids? Everything good about my childhood is brought back by these clips, you sometimes forget how great things were until you see them again.. Honestly kids today seem to have no soul and are so materialistic and care more about their phones than having innocent fun and the sort of adventures that are shown in this show, and that you should have a kid.. pure pleasure! the bassist shows it all. artie shaw's was my favorite big band. his taste was impeccable. while he was idiotic in his personal quotes (i didn't get along w/ my wife so how do you expect me to get along w/ my child -from her, and many others), his musicianship was of extraordinary calibre.

In retrospect, music historians are citing the bands of Artie Shaw and Bob Crosby as probably the best white swing bands of that era. Agreed! Comparing Goodman to Shaw is the old apples and oranges thing. Shaw was a more complex player and definitely had the better tone.

Depending on what getting down is exactly, maybe Count Basie did more, or The Cats And The Fiddle did, or Cab Calloway, or Al Cooper And His Savoy Sultans, or.... Imo Big Joe Turner's "It's All Right Baby" from 1938 sounds more like rock and roll than this does.

When Buddy was 19, he was with Joe Marsala's band, just before he hooked up with Bunny Berigan's outfit in 1937.
