You're right. There was a time where Fuji TV (The Japanese network that has the rights to the Densha Otoko series) had YouTube's complaints email address in it's address and was swift to email a few C & D letters.

i read the manga, watched the movie, watched the series, and read the translation of the original posts (hahah, how's that for an ota of an ota??)... my favorite is the manga so far, I think it handled the story the best way...

Late answer: The movie is just loosely based on the real story. Pretty much after half of the movie it'll break loose pretty much from the original. Also, the movie will somehow give you the idea that this is an original story taking place before the original Densha Otoko story, check the scene after the credits in the movie and notice that there's no office man saving Densha during the first brawl in the train in the beginning of the movie.

Somewhere around the net I even found english translations of this 2-channel posts of Densha Otoko. I don't know where right now, but it rather easy to find. Unfortunately, I don't know the manga, but comparing the tv-series and the movie, I like the series way more. I think the actors are perfectly cast and it's funnier, but it's also deeper than the movie. The series and the movie are two pairs of shoes. And all those specials are related to the series.

Yeah they're different. The only notable difference is that each of them are made by different people. That and the movie seems to have a much more serious tone (haven't actually seen it yet). As for authenticity, the creators just put some artistic license to the story.

Does the movie differ from the tv-series? And do they both differ from the manga? Since I heard this was "based on a real story" I was intrigued by how authentic the movie, manga and series are.

Actually, this is based on a real life story that occured on 2channel. To understand this, you need to either see the TV series of Densha Otoko, the movie, or read the mangas like I did to get the basic. But I think best to see the TV series cause this is their ver. so you can understand the origins one year before this occured.
