So, finally, this is what she wanted to happen. She just asks, "Why couldn't they leave us alone? We just wanted to love each other. I could have just cut his hair and gone to bed. It would have been mundane, but our love story would have been greater than any Bible story that God got out of it, quiet though it may have been." It's a way of saying that she really, truly loved Samson, and we've demonized her unfairly for being caught in the machinations of those fuckers: history and "God."

I feel like, in this story, they loved each other, but she was torn between a duty to her people and a duty to her husband. But Samson was practically invincible, so she felt like she couldn't truly betray him. He would just win against the attackers. But the betrayal was felt emotionally, and that's why he finally told her his true weakness. Remember, she didn't necessarily know he was telling the truth. He'd lied before. It was his anguish with her that led him to make that desperate move.

This song rewrites the story in the Bible. Sometimes I feel like it flies in the face of the Christian God. It's like saying, "Your story isn't as good as the one Samson and I could have written together." I think this is from Delilah's perspective, a retelling that does not demonize her in the Christian tradition of creating temptresses out of women. Comment to be continued. . .
