No, it wasn't hit by Katrina. It was hit badly by the flood of '93 but it all cleaned up from that of course. It floods periodically but always recovers. The city is pretty cool I just hate how the bad parts of the city are so close to the good parts. If you live in a good part of the city, it only takes 5 minutes to get to the filthy infested high crime urban areas.

I just recently saw The Country Girl and still wonder how Garland didnt get the oscar. I mean today they give actors oscars for roles they didnt deserve, but to make up for not being able to win it before (a la Halle Berry for Monsters Ball or Nicole Kidman for Cold Mountain) Too bad they couldnt do it when Judy was alive. This always gives me chills like it was the first time i saw it. She deserved an oscar, not just the munckin one

My fave Garland song. The music just possesses her, and she paid a steep price for it. It was as if she had no skin on her body. She just gave EVERYTHING to the song and held nothing back. When she lets go, it's just astounding. I also love that they left in the scene of James Mason sneaking in to watch her: this is part of the poignancy of this movie, that he's secretly watching her and recognizes her genius, giving her the boost of confidence to make it, while he slips down into oblivion.

No need to be hurtful. Yeah, Judy had her issues (who doesn't?), but it doesn't mean she wasn't a talented performer or that she was a horrible person. No one's life is wonderful 100% of the time... She went through a lot - Maybe she could have handled things better some of the times, but you can say that about anyone. And there are "normal, healthy people" who die at 47. I personally think she did just fine in this episode. I'm just happy to see any footage of Judy. Cheers!

I think that in general comparing Deanna and Judy is like comparing apples with oranges. It's worth noting, however, that when I recently screened a Durbin movie in my home, my guest remarked,"She had a beautiful voice, but it had no soul." I believe he hit the nail on the head: There were many who sounded like Deanna, but absolutely no one who sounded like Judy, who was in a class all by herself. This probably explains Judy's longevity in the American consciousness...

Judy and Deanna remained friends til Judy's death. Judy would rib on her in the jack paar interview but it was all in good fun. Judy met up with Durbin in Paris in 1960 and durbin joked with Garland, "Are you still doing this?". But I will never understand why fans or critics have to bash somebody's appearance or their personal problems. We all have something that we have to deal with in our own lives. Enjoy these stars for what they have given to the world, not rag on them 4 their shortcomings

Judy doesnt need defending. Garland's superstardom speaks for itself. Durbin was a great singer but Garland had the special star quality that endured for decades. Judywas the greatest star of the 20th century and Over the rainbow was the #1 song of the last century. But the two girls were totally different in style and song. God Bless them both.

You do not have to trash Deanna Durbin if you prefer Judy Garland. I prefer Deanna Durbin for 2 reasons - one is that she sang the style of music I enjoy; Judy Garland went into jazzy music which I do not enjoy. Garland's career was longer. It was also sadder. The movie star system tended to chew people up and spit them out. Durbin got out before she was all chewed up; she has had a long and cheerful life. We lost a lot of good music, but what she left in her brief career was excellent.

It's very possible that what Hank had in mind was a "variation on a theme"...I'm sure "Pretty Little Widow" is such an old song that it could've been 'public domain' even back then! A similar example is Joe Maphis' "Fire On The Strings", which is a variation of "Fire on The Mountain" another oldtime fiddle tune; and Earl Scruggs' "Sally Goodwin" being a variation of "Sally Goodin". You CAN copyright a different arrangement variation theme on an older song. Anyhow--they're ALL great recordings!

I watched a video of "Pretty Little Widow" as performed by Stringbean. This is not the same song. There may be some similarities with the banjo chording but it is definately not the same. The song, Sugarfoot Rag evolved from a guitar exercise Hank wrote back in 1947 or 1948.

Credit where credit is most certainly due- great clip. Imagine "Little Sister" or "Temptation" without Hank's guitar? All I can say is DON'T! I wonder if that movie "Crazy" is out yet? I truly admire Hank and his work on Jingle Bells rock and sugarfoot rag etc. but this video version doens't do it justice, the studio version is so much better, he is improvising too much in my opininon, but great to see him never the less. Jetta,I must defend Judy here.I have sung on big stages with Rat Pack tributes and other tribute artists. First off Judy's voice is being amplified with a Stage boom mic, I have sung thru a boom, it's diff from a hand mic, compounded with/fact that she has to sing with two strong voices to her left and right, not to mention if she tried to go Falsetto she'd end up going way flat if she can't hear herself over F and D, she had to hold back on the ending. She had same strong voice up to her death

I was SO born in the wrong era. Born in 1971 I grew up watching Wizard of Oz EVERY year but, it was seeing her specials on PBS, that hooked me. Judy had the most POWERFUl voices in music period. Her stage prescense, well, you can see here. I can't imagine seeing her in person was like.

I love the different levels of the interpretation - especially the smiles in places which to me seem to be about a woman finding a strange relief in the depth of the despair she's feeling about everything around her Who would think to *smile* singing a song like this? And yet its so right Another aspect is that she isn't expressing abject misery - its a person saying 'ok - this is how it is and it stinks but at least we face it and move on' there's hope in there somewhere too amazing

Vincente Minelli really was the perfect director for this movie, he captured Judy's beauty perfectly, and she knew it too. Lucille Bremmer did a good job, but Judy overshadows her completely. That being said, Bremmer was previously just a Rockette who got the role for her, let's just say "bedtime festivities" with Arthur Freed, the producer of the film.

Judy really hated the fact that she had to play a teen again, so for the entire begining of the movie she said all of her lines sarcastically as if she was making fun of the script. its very obvious in this clip that she was having a "grand ol' time". lol but thankfully later on she got over it and she ended up haviing the time of her life. When I got mine long ago, the pegs where the shoulders/wheels form snapped off. Then later the whole arm assembly right at the rotating point between the shoulder and elbow snapped off. A common problem with the original MZ23Part1 Garland. However the Factory Garland and Soldier color are refitted with 2.0 shoulders so it should be fixed. And as stated in this guys other review, the Protogarland from MZ23.2 is perfect. I recommend the Protogarland versus this.

Dear Collection DX or anybody else whose a toy collector, I have a problem. I own one of those Macross Valkyries on an 1/48 scale, but I've lost the detachable nosecone that covers the radar. Do you know whether or not if Yamato Toys offers replacement parts for a fee if I call the Yamato USA subsidary office? Does Yamato offer replacement parts at all?
